FAQ

Am I able to ride a Swingtrike if I have balancing problems?

Yes! The basic model is fitted with a rubber spring, integrated in the tilting joint that stabilizes the vertical starting position. This causes only minimal tilting - especially when the rear brakes are pulled. Optionally, it is possible to operate Swingtrike with a 500mm instead of a 300mm track. This does not affect the tilting function, necessary to take on curves, and improves the possibility of easily returning in an upright position – even on bumpy or curvy roads. Swingtrike riders are able to maintain their balance even on uneven surfaces.

Ergonomics

With standard bikes the saddle is adjusted in a position where its front end is located three inches away from the dropped perpendicular while the heel of the stretched leg – without tilting the pelvis – reaches still the pedal. On the Swingtrike the saddle is located 20cm further back. It also offers a higher position of the steering bar. Thus the ergonomic appropriate bending of the torso in relation to the straightened thighs is kept and a comfortable upright posture is managed. The drivers look is not orientated to the ground anymore but straight ahead without tensing up the neck muscles. Though the leg is stretched in this rear seating position the height of the saddle is approx. 6cm lower than on common bikes. Hence one has not to stand on tiptoes anymore when starting or stopping a ride. Since the cranks are 1cm shorter than normally and the fact that the height of the frame can be lowered again by adjustment screws on the tilting system the Swingtrike offers a very comfortable starting, driving and stopping.

Who might a typical Swingtrike rider be?

Swingtrike is not only an ideal training vehicle for learning how to ride a bicycle. It is also a means for people to improve their flexibility and balance. Learning and relearning to ride a bicycle has also never been easier.
People, who swore that they would never again go by bike, perhaps because of an accident, have found Swingtrike to be the best way to get back on track. People with knee problems will rediscover riding enjoyment due to Swingtrike’s shortened pedal crank. But also people with general mobility challenges, such as Downs Syndrome, will find that they do not need to give up the enjoyment of “bike” riding – finding that they will be able to take on curves with Swingtrike’s dynamic cornering. Only people with spastic paralysis or extreme muscle weaknesses need to switch to inflexible standard tricycles.

What is the advantage of the front wheel drive?

A single front wheel drive weighs less than two rear-wheel drives because there is no differentiated gear box necessary. Moreover, such a design allows the swingarms to be folded. And since the steering bar can be folded together with the stem, the Swingtrike is able to fit in the trunk of a standard car.

Is it possible to ride uphill with the front wheel drive?

Swingtrike is a city or trekking tricycle that offers exciting and safe cornering. Although it is not a mountain bike it can nevertheless manage even inclines of 15% without problems. If necessary, riders can also lift themselves from the saddle and pedal from an upright standing position, like on a standard bike.
